HOMEWORK:

1. Read and reflect on the article Five Good Reasons to Use Science Notebooks

Having used science notebooks in Nature of Science, I completely agree with what the article said about science notebooks.  When I was in Nature of Science, I had only taken 3 science classes compared to the lots of science classes my peers had taken.  So my understanding of the material was different than my peers and I was able to express that in my science notebook.  If we all had to have the same understanding, I do not think I would have been successful.  As I read this article, I kept thinking back to my science class experience in middle and high school.  I truly feel like if my teachers used science notebooks, science class would've been better.  The lessons would have felt more individualizes and personal and not so cookie cutter-y.   In my science class, I definitely want my students to explore science in a way that makes sense to them, and I think science notebooks are a great way to do this!

2. Viewing and reflection of the video Private Universe.

I want to say that I am shocked that the college grads and high school students do know basic astronomy, but I also was unsure so I am not one to judge.  I think this video demonstrates the importance of finding out students prior knowledge and their misconceptions.  It is not safe to assume what students know or do not know.  Students pick up knowledge everywhere and bring that into the classroom.  Some knowledge is correct and some are not.  It is important for teachers to get an understanding of what they know and what they don't.   Heather would not let up on some of her ideas, so it made it difficult for her to understand that correct ideas.  Teachers need to make them aware of their misconceptions and attempt to correct the misconception.
